2013 Geneva Auto Show Highlights

via motortrend.com

If you love automotive design as much as I do, you’ve been eagerly awaiting this past week.

If you haven’t been introduced yet, automotive design is wonderful, particularly because the identity and branding of auto companies are constantly evolving.

The 2013 Geneva Auto Show started March 7th. It is one of four major international auto shows, along with Detroit, New York, and Paris. These shows are often used to premiere new models and fanciful concept cars. This year’s Geneva Auto Show was dominated by luxury manufacturers, with very little coming from the more mainstream companies.

Here are my highlights, though I invite you to look through other coverage of the show yourself:

Good Things:

Alfa Romeo Gloria Concept: This student-designed concept has leather hood straps, and neat squinty headlights.

Ferrari LaFerrari: For the last five years, all of Ferrari’s designs have been ridiculously on-point. I particularly love how the cut-line* from the rear vent folds perfectly up into the rear spoiler (see bottom picture).

*cut-line: the gap between body panels on a car

Subaru Viziv Concept: The name is supposedly a contraction of ‘Vision for Innovation’. I love the taillights.

Less-Good Things:

Kia Provo Concept: Kia/Hyundai continue their descent from the top of design mountain with this concept that completely discards the design language Kia has spent the last five years building up.

Bentley Flying Spur: This band new Bentley already looks ten years old, and a little saggy.

These are my highlights. If you want to check out all the new models and concepts, you can see Motor Trend’s coverage at: http://www.motortrend.com/auto_shows/coverage/100/geneva/2013/
